Not only are they made using only th best parts and correct circuits (JFET y CMOS) but they've also been designed by bassplayers for bassplayers.
If you wanted a great rock tone in the past you had to carry either two bass amps (one clean, one distorted) or even a bass amp (clean) and a guitar amp (dirty). The clever dudes at Darkglass Electronics have builts some extremely musical overdrive units that come with a really nice extra: the Blend control. Even f you dial in an extreme distortion that's also treble heavy, the Blend control allows you to decide what percentage of your sound will be affected but the overdrive. In practice you can either go from a mild overdrive tone, a full bodied distortion or even an extreme sound but you never loose your bottom end.
This is the Microtubes B7K Bass Preamp model and it combines an excellent bass preamp with a beautiful overdrive unit.
The preamp section has a great sounding 4 band EQ section and apart from the balanced XLR output (with ground lift), there's also two 1/4" jack outputs: a normal one for your amp and a parallel output that carries the unprocessed signal of your bass, allowing for external processing or even split the signals and use two channels on your live or recording desk and get separate clean and overdriven channels.
Regarding the overdrive section, controls are Drive (amount of overdrive), Blend (mixes the clean input signals which remains at unity gain) and Level (controls the output level of the overdriven signal). Thanks to the excellent parts and electronic design, you get a most musical (and addictive) overdriven/saturated tone we've ever heard for electric bass.
But wait, there's more: two 3 way mini switches add further control: Grunt (sets the amount of low frequency content to saturate by selecting between three different bass boost levels before the clipping stage. and Attack (Sets the amount of treble content to saturate: The “Boost” setting emphasizes the treble content extra clarity and presence. The “Flat” position leaves this register untouched while the “Cut” position will reduce the amount of high frequencies being saturated. This new addition helps to keep the treble portion of the signal under control, specially useful when playing with new strings and/or cabinets with tweeters!).
