We add one of the biggest names in basses to our inventory.
Mayones Guitars have been building amazing basses since they started operation in Gdansk, Poland, back in 1982.
We've had a number of these instruments for sale and also to be serviced over the last 20 years but we are happy to report that the quality of this brand has been growing year after year and now they have reached an amazing level. We firmly believe that these are some of the best basses that money can buy today and value for money is simply unparalleled.
This model is named Jabba HF Aged Blonde 5 and it's bass extraordinaire Hadrien Feraud's signature model.
When you have someone as gifted as Hadrien Feraud using your basses you know you are doing things right.
This model is obviously based on a Jazz Bass but there's more than meets the eye.
We have vintage basses, modern recreation of those vintage basses and also some modern approaches (Super Jazz Bass) from several different companies. This Mayones Jabba in our opinion is the missing link between Vintage and Super Jazz instruments.
It's deeply based in traditional basses but has enough modern appointments to make it a much better instrument without going over the top, never getting too modern. That's why we love it.
The Relic job on this instrument is nothing short of amazing. It's not just the dings and dents that look cool. It's also the checking on the nitro finish that makes it look so special.
The body is made from swamp ash and it is finished in Monolith Aged Blonde Nitro with matching headstock.
The neck is made from a single piece of maple (for a more direct sound) and it is finished in Trans Vintage Yellow Nitro and has carbon rods inside for added stability. We absolutely love the feel of this neck. Vintage feel but on a modern neck with perfectly set frets that allow for ultra low action (if needed).
For the fingerboard a dark piece of the best rosewood has been chosen and the MOP block inlays look amazing over it
Neck dimensions are absolutely perfect. A 43mm nut means that your left hand will be relaxed at all times. No need for unnecessary stretches here. String spacing at the bridge is 17mm and this is perfect for absolutely every style of music, be it groove, complex chordal playing, Hadrien's intricate voicings or lightning fast solos. Even slapping is super comfortable.
Access up to the 24th fret is totally unrestricted. This is a remarkably comfortable instrument no matter what style you play.
Gold hardware complete a really smart looking bass.
Moving not to the electronics, be ready for a special treat: a set of Delano JMVC 5 FE located in 60's positions deliver a sound to die for. There's a cool ramp made of plexi between them.
The circuit board is a 3 band EQ Velvetrone by 3 Musashi Nitōriyū . Apart from sounding really musical, you also get passive more by pulling the Volume knob. There's no passive tone in passive mode but actually the Treble pot in Active mode behaves quite in the same way. You can get that great soloist sound by using the bridge pickup and trimming down the Treble. It really works.
In addition there's an Aux in and Phones out on the side of the bass so you can just plug your phone/tablet/laptop and connect your phones too and take your whole practice set with you. Incredibly handy and cool.
But wait, there's more: there's a rechargeable battery inside with charging and status indicators so all you need is a USB-C cable and you can forget about batteries forever. Just in case you forget about charging your bass you can always use a standard 9 Volt battery too, don't worry.
Hardware is top notch too. Mayones Bigfoot bridge, Hipshot Ultralite tuners, Schaller straplocks and Graphtech Tusq nut.
As you probably know, getting a low B from a traditional design bass is not easy. We've seen tons of good basses that actually sounded fine but really lacked power and/or focus on the low B. None of this happens here. This is in part due to the 34.25" scale. It feels like a regular 34" bass but that extra quarter of an inch makes all the difference. The Low B is loud, clear and sounds true even in the upper register, amazing.
To sum up: one of the best Jazz 5's we've ever tried. Super comfortable, a joy to play, versatile, great sounding, with an excellent low B and a feast for your eyes too. Amazing value for money, if you ask us.
If it's good enough fro Hadrien Feraud, it should be for you too!
Grab it before it's gone!!
