Setup and exhibition

Everysingle piece of TC Electronic Bass Amplification was present at the xhibition, including th enew BG500 combos which arrived just in time for the show. To make it even more intresting, TC Electronic sent a comprehensive display of guitar effects, voice harmonizers as well as Dynaudio studio monitors and Blue micprohones (including the new stage mic that Jose and Ida used on stage)

Soundcheck

Both Jose Vera and Bassida brought their Mac laptops with backing tracks, so soundcheck was really fast. The excellent balanced DI included in the TC Electronic bass heads was usd to bring the bass out through tht P.A. The house sound engineers remarked how cleand and noise free it was.

We’d like to stress that these are serious sounding amps. Instead of coming up wth a bass amp that sounds good in the shop but then proves to be no good on stage, all the TC Electronic bass products have been designed for REAL tone under REAL circumstances. Forget about artificial Pre-EQ’s and flashy filters. What you get here is true bass tone from your instrument

Jose Vera

Jose pulled out his beloved 1971 Fender Jazz Bass and used the Staccato ‘51 head through the RS410 and RS212 cabinets. In the videos bellow you can hear the direct sound from the amp picked up by the Zomm Q3 handheld video recorder, and you can appreciate the rademart sound from this bass. Jose Vera played several tunes from his two solo CD’s “Concepts” and “Butterfly”. butterfly has just been nominated for the Spanish Music Awards in the “Best Jazz Album” category. You can get these CD’s in our shop for 10€ each.

Ida “Funkhouser”

Ida flew from Denmark on the same day and brought with her a Sandberg California “Hardcored Aged” wth P and MM pickups, as well as a Yamaha TRB5P, using the first one for slapping and the fiver for fingerstyle mainly. She switched to the Rebelhead 450 head for a true “old school” sound and used the same RS410 and RS212 cabinets as Jose Vera. Ida blew everyone away with her amazing technique and groovy tunes. She’s definitely got The Funk!! She left some copies of her latest solo CD “Marmelade” which you can get for 10€

Towards the end of the event, Jose and Ida joined on stage for a coule of bass jams. Ida used the BG500-210, and it worked perfectly next to the big stack (you can hear the direct sound in the videos bellow)

Here’s the full report of the Guitar Day 2010

Our stand was packed with High End basses. 4o basses to be precise. Now, that’s a great red carpet

Of course all the instruments on display were ready to be tested, so many players got the chance to try and compare different high end basses. Those who know us are aware of our careful customer support and attention to detail, so we just took that approach to the Guitar Day and bassplayers seemed to enjoy that, apart from the basses themselves. We took loads of pictures and also recorded a few clips with some demos at our booth.

Our head is already on the 2011 edition of the Guitar Day

This is our first time exhibiting at a trade show, so we took some of our best basses there such as Fodera, Alembic, Smith, Sadowsky, Jerzy Drozd, Marleaux, etc., etc.

We took 4 Epifani rigs and these proved to be very effective at amplifiying all these great basses, even under the noise environment of a trade show.

- Jerzy Drozd Oracle VI: this is the first production instrument within this new series by Jerzy Drozd, with some really special specs such as: 33″ scale, flat fingerboard, thin frets, glued in neck on a Singlecut design, and a new splittable double coil. Jerzy has designed this bass from scratch to offer a completely different playing experience, and we are happy to report it delivers.

- Rickenbacker 4003: as you know, one of the hardest basses to get these days. We had two in the shop, so we decided to take one to the show.

- KSD Burner 6 string: KSD have just released the brand new series of Burner basses, with a design and inspiration taken directly from the USA Smith models. We have received 4, 5 and 6 string models, and chose this 6 string for the show as we think Smith basses are amongst the best 6’s in the market. Prices range between 1200€ and 1500€

- Epifani PS400 & PS1000: these new heads follow the concept of the UL902/502 & PS 600 heads, meaning pure tone, clean power and ultra low noise. The good news is that these new heads are more affordable. Quite lightweight too!

- Prat 5 string Neck Thru: Óscar Prat sent this nice 5 string neck thru bass just in time for the Guitar Day. With a collection of great timberwoods, flawless construction and top electronics by Bartolini, this is a gorgeous instrument.

- David Gage Soundclip: again, we got this just in time for the Guitar Day. We love The Realist pickup for double bass by David Gage, but the new Soundclip represents one step forward in terms of sound and use. The Soundclip, as it name implies, consists of a transducer that clamps to the bridge in 2 seconds, meaning you can travel with it and attach it to the bass at the gig in no time at all. It allows you to find the best spot in your instrument for the best amplified sound. Not only does it sound very natural, but the added weight of the system is also intended to improve the mass at the bridge, eliminating wolf notes, so you can find that the acoustic tone of your upright actually improves when you leave the Soundclip on. The system comes with two weights, one 33.3 grams and one 66,6 grams, so you can experiment with these.

- Pensa 4 & 5 cuerdas: this is the latest brand that we have incorporated into our selection of exclusive basses. Rudy Pensa has been making amazing guitars and basses for a couple of decades, with bassplayers like Victor Bailey and Richad Bona swearing by their Pensa basses. Here in Spain we have bass extraordinaire Antonio Ramos “Maca” using Pensa too. We agreed on an exclusive distribution of Pensa basses with Rudy in New York a couple of months ago. We have received the first two basses and will get the next 2 very soon. The ones we took to the Guitar Day were a Custom 4 and Custom 5, and both caused a great impression in those who tried them at the show. They are built from selected tonewoods and top of the shelf hardware and electronics and the result is even better than the sum of its parts (you cannot say this often). The special Pensa preamp is a very important part of this. Testers at our booth abolutely loved their feel and sound.

Rubén Rubio

Rubén is a professional bassplayer who bought one of the first Marleaux basses that we received in the shop several years ago (Straight II model). He absolutely loved its feel, touch, sound , low B and low weight. Later on he was needing a more traditional sounding and feeling bass and we had just received the first Votan model, so he bought one in the spot and is raving about it. Then we decided he’d be our demostrator for Marleaux at trade shows, and this was his first time to do it. Rubén played a few demos at the booth using several Marleaux basses. You can watch the videos bellow. Even with the little video recorder you can feel the great tone of these basses (pay attention to his white Votan).

Merlos

José Merlos contacted Doctorbass.net some months ago as he was interested in us testing his basses. We are happy to lend a hand to aspiring luthiers as long as their instruments are good enough, so we asked him to send a bass for a test, and were impressed by the craftsmanship and attention to detail of the 6 string bass he sent. We instantly settled on an exclusive agreement to sell his basses as we feel a luthier should concentrate in building basses, and a shop in selling them. This was clear for both parts, so we hope this is the beginning of a long time relationship. Merlos finished a very nice 4 string just before the show and brought it with him the day before (he also was kind enough to help up set up the booth, THANKS!). People who tried Merlos basses agreed they are perfectly made, sound great and represent excellent value for money. Merlos is a bassplayer too, and you can feel he has designed these from the player’s perspective, solving several design and comfort issues that are not normally addressed. Be ready to see some more Merlos here at Doctorbass.net soon.

Here’s a selection of pictures from different stands at the Guitar Day. The man behind this event is called Helio Yago and you can see him behind his impressive Nikon SLR and very expensive lens We took some pics of some of the basses at the show, like the new top of the line Yamaha BB2024X, the new Gene Simmons signature Cort Axe as well as some heavy BC Rich and nice Schecter basses. The new Weisse Hügel basses were quite interesting, mixing exotic woods and a graphite neck in 4, 5 and 6 string versions, with an original body shape and top hardware and electronics . Eastwood displayed several of their retro designed basses, and Tony Fayós (one of Spain’s best luthiers) had a very nice 1oo% handmade bass at his booth. As for amps, we could see Markbass and Aguilar among others. Yamaha were presenting their 4th edition of the Guitar Hero contest which will include BASS PLAYERS for the first time. Of course Doctorbass.net are involved in this and you will be able to learn the details in a few weeks.

GUITAR DAY 2011

We are more than happy to have been a part of the 2010 edition of the Guitar Day in Madrid, so we are already looking forward to being here again next year.

The Guitar Day is a Guitar trade show that gathers from brands to distributors and luthiers, as well as specialized shop/importers like Doctorbass.net

Here’s some of the basses we’ll take to the shop and a brief description.

FODERA: Probably the brand with a higher GAS rating currently. Completely handmade by Vinnie Fodera and Joey Lauricella in Brooklun, New York, Fodera have been making amazing basses for more than 25 years now, leading the market in terms of designs, vision and trend setting. With players like Victor Wooten, Richard Bona, Anthony Jackson, Mathew Garrison, Mike Pope and Matthew Garrison (to name just a few), Fodera make no compomises about building basses and they are one of the few brands that actually build many different types of basses in terms of sound, feel and approach, all of them sharing one common feature: total quality.

MARLEAUX: from Germany, Gerald Marleaux has been making handmade basses for more than 20 years and we can safely say that they represent an amazing value for money. Every little detail is taken into account. As soon as you play one, you can instantly feel that Gerald has approached every aspect of bass building in a very smart way. The fact that he is an excellent bassplayer is very important, as he puts his expertise as a player into each one of his handmade basses.

ALEMBIC: If you can think of a legendary brand, this is probably Alembic. They created many of the features that today are considered normal 40 years ago, such as neck trhu construction, split bridge/tailpiece, low impedance pickups, studio quality electronics, and the use of exotic woods.

PENSA: From the hands of Dudy Pensa in New York, these Super Jazz Basses are among the most sought after, and that’s for a reason: they are extraordinary players, with a top class sound and clever electronics.

KEN SMITH: Ken is a heavy name in modern electric bass building, having come with many of what today are considered standard features. His basses ozze class and are really well balanced in terms of playability and sound. Check one out and you’ll undertand why they have remained a player’s favourite for several decades now.

SADOWSKY: From his shop in Brooklyn, New York, Roger Sadowsky is the man responsible for the Super Jazz concept. He installed the active 2 band preamp in Marcus Miller’s 77 Fender JB and took it from there. Roger’s basses represent a perfect balance between classc design/tone and modern workmanship and power. That’s why you’ll find them in so many studios (the electronics are dead quiet).

JERZY DROZD: We are lucky to have in Spain this great luthier from Poland. Jerzy has been making absolutely unique basses for more than 2o years. Jerzy has made himself a name as an expert in ERB (Extended Range Bass), ahving created some awesome 10 and 12 string instruments for players like Yves Carbonne, but of course he makes perfect 4, 5 and 6 string basses too His Obsession series boasts perfect playability, sound and feel, with one of the best low B’s in the market. Jerzy Drozd also makes the Barcelona bass for flamenco bass maestro Carles Benavent.

CHRIS LARKIN GUITARS: Fromt he beautiful West coast of Ireland, master luther Chris Larkin has been building beautiful instruments all 100% made by hand. Chris makes all sorts of stringed instruments, but he is lately coming with some new bass designs that come to solve several problems in a very clever way. He only uses the best woods and hardware, and he is one of the few luthiers that is open to any suggestion and is happy to desing a bass from scratch to meet your demands.

OVERWATER BASS GUITARS: From Carlisle, U.K., Chris May and his small team of craftsmen have been making great handmade basses for more than 30 years now. Overwater pioneered low range bases with their C bass (tuned CGDA). These are professional basses that have always relied on their own pickups and hardware in order to achieve the best possible results.

KSD: Meaning Ken Smith Design. Ken Smith wanted to come with an affordable bass so he based on the Jazz Bass that he used himself in the 70’s when he was a professional bassist and this is the result: excellenty built basses that caputre the essence of those instruments from the 60’s and 70’s with some modern features as an active preamp (we offer the wonderful J Retro 01 Deluxe by John East as un upgrade). This is one of our top sellers.

STATUS GRAPHITE: Rob Green (U.K.) was one of the first ones to use graphite to build basses back int he 80’s. The idea was to produce a neck that would be much more stable and wouldn’t move under changes in temperature and/or humidity. The headless design also helped tuning stability and became a trademark too. His latest basses are his best ever, with a two way truss rod that allows you to set your favourite relief dependint on your playing style. Graphite also eliminates dead notes and makes the instrument very consisten in terms of string volume and evenness of tone up and down the neck.

PRAT GUITARS: Óscar Prat is a luthier from Barcelona now based in Ohio (USA). He makes his basses totally by hand and is starting to make himself known as an experte in ERB (Extended Range Bass).

MERLOS: Jose Merlos from Alicante, Spain, used to be the distributor for German basses Shack so he has a great experience with complex electronics. He makes beautiful basses completely by hand with some interesting circuits.

STICK ENTERPRISES: The Stick is an instrument created by Emmet Chapman in California back in the early 70’s. Chapman created it as he needed an extended range guitar. Rather than make a variation on a standard instrument, he came up with a totally new approach, creating this instrument from the scratch where the left hand plays the “Bass and chord” part with a string arrangement in inverted 5ths and the right hand plays the melody in standard 4ths. Once you get used to this arrangement, the possibilities are endless. This is an instrument designed to be played with the tapping technique, with a string tension that really makes it very easy to play. The damper at the first fret and stereo electronics complete an amazing instrument tha falls naturally under your hands when you use the supplied strap and belt hook.

GUITARRAS QUILES: Vicente Quiles is a Spanish luthier who makes all the guitar family instruments in the classical tradition. Apart from the standard classical/Spanish guitar, he makes all the local variations of the instrument within different parts of Spain, including all the Guitar Orquestra members, among the bass guitar covers the lower range. The standard Bass Guitar is usually 4 string or 6 string (tuned one octave bellow guitar), but we work with Quiles in order to incorporate some features that we think are important, such as different scale lenghts and body depths, as well as a cutaway, good quality tuners and pickup/microphone system.

THE REALIST: We think this is the most natural pickup system in the market, period. David Gage (a true reference when it comes to Double basses repair from his shop in New York). David developed this pickup together with bass innovator Ned Steinberger, with the aim of reproducing the natural sound of the double bass, as well as making it as hassle-free as possible. Impedance is about the same as a standard electric bass, so there’s no need for a specific preamp (although of course you can use one if you want).

EPIFANI: Located in the same building as Fodera in Brooklyn, New York, Nick Epifani is considered as the guru of modern electric bass amplification. He takes a no compromise approach to designing and building his stuff. His cabinets, especially the UL-410 are the standard when it comes to uncoloured bass amplification. The amps follow the same philosophy: The lows are tight and focused, the midrange is all there (no scooped sound), and the treble is true and pure. Just plug a good bass into one of these rigs and you’ll hear the true sound of the instrument. Think of it as a studio monitor with power and headroom for live use. Epifani’s cabinets and amps are also lightweight and sound far more natural than other brand’s neodymium speakers.

The TC ELECTRONIC DAY will consist of an exhibition of gear from this superb dannish brand. Entrance is free, and you’ll be able to try all the bass products as well as guitar effects and studio gear.

The brand new BG500 Series combos will be the star of the show, and will prove that these are very able indeed, despite of the more afforable price tag.

We will be showing all the bass products, including all the heads, cabinets and modular combos as well.

After the demo session, there will be two concerts from TC Electronic endorsers Jose Vera (Spain) and Ida Funkhouser (Denmark). We expect there’ll be a jam with both of them funkying their hearts out towards the end of the show. It will be fun.

There were more than 50 Warwick basses in stock, as well as lots of amps from all the different series in what might be the largest Warwick eshibition apart from the Musikmesse in Frankfurt and the NAMM show in Los Angeles.

We had 3 Warwick endorsers for the show: TM Stevens, Marcos Miranda and Ignasi Zamora.

TM Stevens at Doctorbass.net

TM arrived in Burgos the day before the show and of course he came to the shop. He was shocked to find such an extensive stock of basses here. Not just the amount of basses, but also the number of High End instruments. Just like Richard Bona said when he visited us last year, he was surprised to find sich a shop in a small Spanish town that actually surpasses what you’ll find in major cities like TM’s own New York. TM Stevens got to try a lot of basses and enjoyed a lot, although he obviously preferred Warwick basses above the rest We got to record a few nice videos that we will include in this Blog ina ciuple of days. After that, we went out for dinner with the Backline team and had a great time sharing experiences with TM. He made everything really easy for us, and we were really glad that someone with his background was so close and easy-going.

Setting everything up

Backline Import sent 5 HUGE PALETS full of Warwick hear, with more than 30 basses and lots of amps. We added our own stock of 15 Warwick basses and some of the last Made in Germany amps, and spent several hours setting everything up. We have kept all the basses that Backline set for the show, and are offering them at a reduced price for a limited time. We will include pictures, specs and price for every single bass in a couple of days in this Blog.

Expo

This is how it looked like. When all the amps were working and all the basses correctly set up and in tune, doors opened and lots of bassplayers were able to try all the stuff in a relaxed manner for a couple of hours. Some basses were sold on the spot.

Soundcheck

Soundcheck was fluid and fun. TM Stevens brought some backing tracks to play on, and then Marcos and Ignasi added some ideas for the show.

TV

A local TV channel recorded part of the soundcheck and did a report of the bass exhibition (with a short interview to us). The host of the show “Burgos es así” jumped onstage and improvised a jingle for the show with TM Stevens. Now, that was fun!

Marcos Miranda & DJ Matamala

Renowned bassplayer Marcos Miranda (Lo + Plus band, Deneon, Nawja Nimri, etc.) & DJ Matamala (Deneón, etc.) started the show with a very interesting proposal. They explained how to set up a Live act duo with a DJ and a bassplayer, as a way to get some gigs in these hard times. This is a very interesting option as travel and accomodation costs are cut down to a minimum. Sure, you’ll find lots of Live Acts these days, but it is not often that a bass will be a part of it. Marcos explained the type of gear that is handy for this project, and stressed the importance of interacting with the DJ. They played several songs in different styles of electronic music, from House to Chill Out, Drum ‘n Bass, etc. Towards the end of the set Marcos found a spot to feature some more bass to show that you can also use your technical abilities and bass licks to add colour to the set.

TM Stevens

TM Stevens took the stage by the storm. This man oozes energy and hits his bass really hard, and grooves like nobody’s business. With his poweful metal-funk and soul vocals he brought the audience to the stage edge and really moved them. Not bad, considering they were mostly musicians He talked about the importance of the Groove and explained how a simple line with a lot of groove can move the audience as opposed to a lightning fast lick. TM Stevens has a really impressive background and a vast experience so he knew perfectly how to handle the situation and make it work. He played a couple of backing tracks as well as solo pieces. Then he called fellow players Marcos Miranda and Ignasi Zamora for a bass jam with some really interesting moments. He even called some bassplayers from the audience to join him on the stage (I was there too!). To sum up, a great party with the bass up front. Perfect

Bass Jam

Here are some pictures of the bass jam with Marcos and Ignasi. They met at soundcheck, but this proves that music has no boundaries and players as different as these three can come up with some great moments with no rehearsal at all.

For this year’s edition, apart from some amazing basses (our favourite 6 pieces are already on their way to Doctorbass.net), Gerald Marleaux has launched the new ART Marleaux series, which consists of very arty and special creations that come out of his mind. The idea is not to take orders for wild dseigns, but rather release a number of basses that he creates personally, just as a painter would do. Of course, when the basses are finished, you can buy them. This is a new approach to bass biolding and custom projects, and reveals Gerald’s unique vision about his job. Gerald himself explains so in this video

The Sopran (tuned one octave above standard) is one of Marleaux’s most special basses. Not many luthiers build Piccolo basses these days, and the Sopran is probably the best. With an Octave pedal it can sound like a standard bass.
